The WBBL Championship regular season has come to a close, with Nottingham Wildcats retaining their title in one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory. Here we honour the players that we feel have stood out amongst their peers, and name the first ever #WhosThatGirl WBBL Team of the Year.
STARTERS
ASHLEY HARRIS - NOTTINGHAM WILDCATS
18 GAMES PLAYED, 25.3 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 2.2 SPG, 56% FG
Wildcats star Ashley Harris has been the class of the WBBL over the 2016/17 season, torching opponents all year as she causes match-up problems with her dynamic inside-out game. Harris has also made her presence felt on the defensive end, using her size and length to be disruptive and help clean the back boards to the tune of 11.3 rebounds per game to go with her 25.3 points, averaging a very impressive double-double for the campaign. A key indicator for how key Harris is for her team is her incredibly efficient 56% field goal rate.
GEORGIA JONES - MANCHESTER MYSTICS
18 GAMES PLAYED, 17.8 PPG, 6.8 PPG, 5 RPG
Great Britain guard Georgia Jones returned to her hometown club for the latest campaign, and had a breakout year as she led the Mystics to a resurgence, showing her calibre with valuable scoring and playmaking. extending her lead atop the all-time WBBL assist charts in the process as the Belle Vue outfit secured a 4th place finish.
CATHERINE CARR - SEVENOAKS SUNS
18 GAMES PLAYED, 18.8 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 5 APG
Sevenoaks talisman Catherine Carr continued to prove that she's one of the toughest covers in the WBBL, as she performed multiple roles for the Kent side. Often one of the most active players on the floor, Carr got loose for 18.8 points per contest, and pulled down 7.4 rebounds as she also dished out 5 assists, displaying her versatility as the leader of the 3rd placed Suns.
ALEX SMITH - LEICESTER RIDERS
18 GAMES PLAYED, 10.9 PPG, 6.6 APG, 5.6 RPG
American play-maker Alex Smith has been the beating heart of the Leicester Riders this season as she capably filled the shoes of the departed Jones. As one of the most intelligent players in the league, Smith was able to post averages of 10.9 points, 6.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds as the Swiss army knife for Coach Matt Harber's 2nd placed outfit.
ALISON GORRELL - TEAM NORTHUMBRIA
18 GAMES PLAYED, 20.7 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 2.5 SPG
in what has been a testing season for the defending playoff champions, Alison Gorrell has stepped forward to help Northumbria secure a 6th placed finished as she confirmed he place amongst the league's elite. An all-action performer, Gorrell was irresistible as she averaged 20.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and caused havoc on the defensive end with he 2.5 steals per contest as Northumbria's decimated roster secured a playoff spot.
