WEEKLY DIGEST - WEEK 3

Another week of women's basketball action saw some big results at the top of the WBBL table, and NBL D1 Women is gaining momentum.

LEICESTER RIDERS (3-0) 85-63 CALEDONIA PRIDE (1-1) Boxscore

Leicester Riders continued their hot start to the season as they navigated a potential banana skin game against a Caledonia Pride outfit that has made a habit of claiming big scalps. Four Riders starters posted double figures scoring, led by Deanne Hayward's 18 points, with Alex Smith registering a 12 point 12 assist double-double performance in an efficient outing for the hosts.

Rosanna Reynolds' 19 points & Sarah Thomson's 12 points were not enough in reply for the Pride, who struggled to generate scoring from their bench in the contest.

Ball movement was incredibly key for Leicester who assisted on 30 of their 34 made field goals.

OAKLANDS WOLVES (0-2) 42-88 SEVENOAKS SUNS (3-0) Boxscore

Aliz Varga & Lizzy Harrison both scored 8 points to lead the Wolves in scoring as the St. Albans outfit struggled from the floor against an experienced and high powered opponent.

In a slow paced game, Sevenoaks kept the scoreboard ticking over by connecting on an incredible 51% from the field, and 90% from the free throw line.

MANCHESTER MYSTICS (2-1) 92-55 DURHAM PALATINATES (0-2)Boxscore

Manchester Mystics bounced back from a home defeat in their previous outing by dominating struggling newcomers Durham Palatinates behind the stellar play of Georgia Jones (30 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast). With Rheanne Bailey (15 pts) & Lauren Thomas-Johnson (20 pts) supporting, the Great Britain guard was able to put the visitors to the sword early, with 5 of her 7 3-pointers coming in the first period.

Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee (17 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast) and Paula Tarnachowicz (22 pts, 10 reb) battled hard for the North-East team, but fatigue was always likely to be a factor on the road.

As if to highlight the need for Durham to flesh out their roster, the home team were able to generate 35 points from the bench, as they led by as much as 43 points.

CARDIFF MET ARCHERS (1-2) 73-78 NOTTINGHAM WILDCATS (1-2) Boxscore

Reigning league MVP Ashley Harris returned to the lineup for Nottingham Wildcats, and didn't miss a beat as she led the defending champions to their first victory of the season. In what proved to be a battle between two of the elite players in the WBBL, Harris' 31 point, 12 rebound double-double was too much to overcome for the Archers.

Stef Collins (26 pts, 10 rebs) and Merissa Quick (17 pts, 10 rebs) both posted double-double stat lines of their own in response for the Welsh team, but they would ultimately fall short, Nottingham's 28-9 bench scoring advantage being the major difference.

Having Harris in this form will be vital if Nottingham are to climb the table, proving irresitable as the shot 57% from the field, including 66% from beyond the arc, to go with 83% free throw shooting.

TEAM NORTHUMBRIA (1-3) 65-72 CITY OF SHEFFIELD HATTERS (4-0) Boxscore

City of Sheffield continued their blistering start to the Championship campaign by securing another vital road win against the stalling Team Northumbria. Behind the combination of Gianna Woods (27 pts, 17 rebs) and Stephanie Gandy (19 pts, 10 rebs) submitting huge double-double efforts, the Hatters were able to dominate the boards to the tune of 52 to 35, including 21 offensive rebounds.

Allison Gorrell (19 pts, 8 ast) led four starters in double figures scoring for the hosts, who felt the absence of Chantelle Handy as they shot a lean 36% from the floor, and 26% behind the 3-point line.

Gianna Woods continues to prove to be a key addition to coach Vanessa Ellis' roster as she shot an incredible 11/11 from the free throw line on her way to a 32 efficiency rating.
