WEEKEND DIGEST - WEEK 1

City of Sheffield Hatters vs Durham Palatinates

This weekend saw the opening fixtures in the WBBL, Division 1 Women and Under 18 Women. With lots of games played, we have plenty to to get to in our first Weekly digest of the 2017/18 season.

WBBL

Oaklands Wolves (0-1) 42-68 Cardiff Met Archers (1-0) Boxscore

Cardiff Met Archers picked up a strong road win in St. Albans against the re-tooled Wolves behind 25 points from debutant Merissa Quick, and a Stef Collins double-double (11 pts, 11 ast). Kellie Ring and Kriztina Nagy battled for Oaklands, posting 12 and 10 points respectively in response, but the hot shooting of the Archers (45% 3FG) would ultimately prove too much to overcome. Despite losing stand-out performer Judit Fritz to playoff champions Sevenoaks, the Archers look set to challenge higher up the table than in recent seasons, with the added experience of Eilidh Simpson and Kate Butters to call upon.

City of Sheffield Hatters (1-0) 92-37 Durham Palatinates (0-1) Boxscore

League newcomers Durham Palatinates were given a rough welcome by perrenial contenders City of Sheffield, as they dropped their opening contest on the road by 55 points. Great Britain guard Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee submitted a valiant 24 point effort, but it would prove to be simply insufficient, as four Hatters scored in double-figures, led by debutant Krizstina Velkey, who flirted with a triple double with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Joining her in double-figures were Helen Naylor (17 pts), Gianna Woods (16 pts), ans Stefanie Gandy (11 pts). Sheffield look in good shape as they bid to avoid finishing trophy-less for a second consecutive season, whilst Durham appear to have work to do, not least of all adding to their roster if they are to compete in the top league.

Nottingham Wildcats (0-1) 52-59 Sevenoaks Suns (1-0) Boxscore

Week 1 of WBBL action saw a replay of the 2016/17 playoff final, with the Suns once again pervailing over the Wildcats in a closely fought affair. League MVP Ashley Harris hit her stride immediately, submitting a typical double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds, but crucially Catherine Carr would respond in kind, posting figures of 20 points and 11 rebounds, with scoring support coming from Chantelle Pressley (15 pts). Clean scoring chances would prove to be hard to come by in this battle of attrition between two sides that know each other well, and the contest would ultimately be decided by freethrows (Wildcats 6/12, Suns 14/18) and turnovers (Wildcats 20, Suns 13). Both sides figure to challenge for major honours again this season, and will be amongst the league leaders come April.

Team Northumbria (0-1) 74-79 Manchester Mystics (1-0) Boxscore

New addition Chantelle Handy had an impressive debut for Northumbria spoilt by a Georgia Jones inspired Manchester Mystics side as the Great Britain teammates did battle in the North East. Strong numbers of 18 points and 8 rebounds by Handy, supported by 14 & 13 points from Alison Gorrell and Kara Bonenberger, were nullified by Jones' monster effort of 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists, backed up by Dominique Allen (16 pts), Rheanne Bailey (14 pts), and debutant Natalie Chaloner (14 pts) all scoring in double-figures. The game was a great display of team basketball, with both teams handing out 44 assists on 57 made field-goals between them, and that trait should hold them in good stead as the season goes on.

BA London Lions (0-1) 35-61 Leicester Riders (1-0) Boxscore

Leicester Riders defeated a youthful BA London Lions outfit on the road to get their season challenge underway. Zoe Willis (13 pts), Christina Gaskin (8 pts), and Flora Durgerian (4pts) fought hard for BA, but ultimately the experience off Deanne Hayward (15 pts), Erin McGarrahan (12 pts), and Alex Smith (8 pts) would be telling in a somewhat scrappy affair. Great Britain forwards Mollie Campbell (10 rebs) and Jamila Thompson (12 rebs) would be real difference makers for the Riders as they dominated the boards to the tune of 58 rebounds to Ba's 40. Once again, Leicester Riders look like a team t watch in the championship reckoning, looking to improve on last season's Cup semi-final and Trophy runner-up results.
